You do not need to install Dataverse Network software to access or contribute data or to create a dataverse. A dataverse is a self-contained virtual archive not requring any local software or hardware. See how to create my own dataverse. Software installations are only required to create an entire Dataverse Network (which serves out dataverses to local sites).
If you represent a university, archive, library, or other institution, you may be interested in installing a Dataverse Network on your computers. This will give you full control of the data storage and back-ups. It will require you to have to maintain a production server and a file system, and upgrade the application as needed. Go to Software Installation to learn more.
Open Source & Standards Acknowledgements: Dataverse Network Software is written under the Java Platform, Enterprise Edition (Java EE) 5 using the latest Java technologies, including Enterprise Java Beans (EJB) 3 and Java Server Faces. It runs on top of the Glassfish Application Server. (We use PostgreSQL for database software, but other databases can easily be used instead, such as Oracle or MySQL.) The data analysis component uses R and Zelig for statistical computing.
